DESCRIPTION:
Savute, a remote and wild corner of Chobe National Park, stretches from the park’s northern boundaries to the Linyanti River. It’s named after the enigmatic Savute Channel, which flows and dries up intermittently, seemingly unrelated to rainfall: it flowed in 2009, again in 2013 and no-one can say when it will flow again.
Savute Under Canvas is a mobile camp carefully positioned close to this channel which feeds into the Savute Marsh, home to exceptional numbers of elephant-hunting lion.

Situated within the unique and haunting Savute landscape, the exclusive mobile campsites are perfectly situated to explore this remote region. The common guest area comprises open-sided tents for dining, pre-dinner drinks, or simply whiling away the time between game viewing adventures with a good book and a frosted beer or glass of wine. Delicious meals cooked over the coals are shared around a blazing fire.

You’ll love the spaciousness of our mobile tents. Each of the five canvas tents boasts a comfortable double or twin bed, as well as an ensuite bathroom, separate flush WC and an outdoor bucket shower – steaming hot water is available on request. A private butler is on hand to assist with any requirements.

Live this real-life adventure, immersed in the wild world of Savute.

Game viewing in Savute is remote and wild. Savute is a famous battleground for lions and spotted hyena, and with grazing now plentiful, guests can now also enjoy frequent sightings of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, tsessebe and kudu. andBeyond’s professionally trained guides will ask you about your favourite wildlife and will do their best to ensure that your preferences are met, whether it is tracking a particular species or spending more time enjoying each sighting and getting to know the habits of the animals. They will also tell you about the vegetation of the region and will explain the behaviour of the animals that you come across. In some cases, the guides will be able to identify individual animals and let you know about their history and habits. Explore the ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills, a small hilly outcrop overlooking the landscape. Marvel at the avenue of ancient baobab trees a short distance away at the edge of the wide open plains of Savute. Sunset colours provide a superb photographic opportunity.

HIGHLIGHTS

Savute (also known as Savuti) is famous for its mysterious and fascinating channel. It runs a distance of 100 km (62 mi) from the Chobe River, through a gap in the sand ridge, to the Mababe Depression, which flows and dries up seemingly unrelated to the rainfall. Dry and arid for almost 30 years, animals in the area were sustained by artificial waterholes. With the Savute Channel flowing again in recent years, the region has undergone a startling transformation, reverting to its natural lush and marshy state. Large numbers of wildlife have been attracted to this rejuvenated wilderness haven.

Sizable numbers of elephant bulls are invariably present. During the dry years, when prey was hard to find, many of Savute’s lion became notorious for hunting elephant. With the recent transformation of the region, prey has become more abundant and the large lion prides have split up into smaller family groups, allowing a greater variety of predators to flourish in the area. Savute is also a famous battleground for lion and spotted hyena. With grazing now plentiful, the area is also popular with zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, tsessebe and kudu.

The birds of Savute are an attraction all by themselves. Africa’s heaviest flying bird, the kori bustards prey on snakes and rodents found amongst the grass. Other birding attractions include the endangered ground hornbill, which can be seen meandering through the grasslands. Raptors are ever-present, including the iconic Bateleur eagle. Pin tailed whydahs glide across the grass in awkward swoops. Korhans give out their mating cries while flipping themselves into the air to attract attention from a potential mate.
