Shamwari Private Game Reserve is a premier safari and holiday destination in South Africa’s ecologically and culturally significant Eastern Cape Province.

Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, is the pinnacle of private game reserves and home to the coveted Big 5. It’s a place where guests can exist in harmony with nature, however fleeting the moment, where wildlife roam the landscape under the relentless African sun. Long Lee Manor was built in 1910 and is Shamwari’s flagship lodge. This magnificent Edwardian five-star manor has been beautifully restored and offers a colonial experience in the heart of the African bush. Long Lee Manor offers exceptional comfort, personalized service and spectacular views of the waterhole and plains that sweep down to the Bushman’s River.

The manor offers 4 Garden Rooms, 11 Plains Rooms, 2 Manor House Suites and 1 Family Suite, each boasting twin beds that can be converted into king beds, an en-suite bathroom with separate shower, satellite tv, minibar, air conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, in-room safe, and a patio or balcony offering mountains or garden views.

The facilities offered at the manor include one large rim-flow pool, a relaxation retreat, fitness centre and steam room, dining room, outdoor boma, conference facility, and gift boutique.

Enjoy early morning and evening game drives that are led by professional guides and guided game walks that afford up-close encounters with the smaller wondrous creatures of the African bush. Visits can be arranged to Shamwari’s Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre and the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve is home to Africa's Big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, and leopard), is malaria-free and is situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Shamwari has received numerous international awards, including the World's Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for many consecutive years.

Large numbers of ungulates sustain a healthy population of lion, cheetah, and the elusive leopard. Grasslands are home to white rhino, and the subtropical thicket provides browsing for elephant and black rhino. Hippo is found in the riverine habitat. The reintroduced red-billed ox-pecker is a common site on buffalo, rhino, and giraffe.

Our rangers share their intimate knowledge of the reserve and their own expert insights to make each natural encounter a special event. Here, you can gain a true perspective of the fauna and flora indigenous to the region. Your guide can also point out animal tracks, dung, birds and can educate you on the area and its rich history.
