Location
18km upstream from the Victoria Falls, Zambia.
DESCRIPTION:
This award winning eco-lodge 18km outside Livingstone, Zambia leans into the tranquillity of its hidden location on the banks of the Zambezi River.
Combine romance and luxury with a hint of adventure as you relax just 18km upstream of Victoria Falls. The joyous team at ongabezi welcome guests to a selection of Houses and Cottages, each embellished with interiors lovingly chosen from around Africa. Immerse yourself in nature and experience unique dining and river activities.
Conde Nast may have called Tongabezi one of the top 20 Hotels in the World,. Its five River Cottages, four Houses, and three Family Houses emphasise individuality and exclusivity, which is why it is especially important to choose a room that best reflects the Tongabezi experience you are dreaming of.
The setting – among indigenous trees some 18km upstream of the Victoria Falls – is inspirational, giving superb views over the river yet shaded from the harsh Zambian sun. Adding a tropical feel, a waterfall streams down the natural rocks into the free-form swimming pool, while the Lookout affords something of a bird’s eye view.
Meals – which are excellent – are enjoyed in the thatched dining area or on the riverside deck, where a firepit brings warmth to cooler evenings. Drinks are always on hand, and if it all gets too much, just head to the spa for a soothing massage.
Each house is allocated a personal “valet” to look after guests, and to arrange activities – from canoeing and island picnics to Falls and village excursions. Underpinned by Tongabezi’s commitment to its staff – and the wider community – it’s a standard of service that runs throughout.
Enjoy doing as much or as little as you want although there are plenty of activities on offer. Victoria Falls is the adventure capital of Africa with a wide range of white-knuckle activities – like rafting, bungee jumping and bridge swinging – to choose from. You can also head out on nature and bird watching walks, 4X4 game drives in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park or boat cruises on the Zambezi in search of elephant and hippo. Visit local markets and villages for gifts and souvenirs and of course be sure to visit ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ – Victoria Falls, which is best viewed up close.
Tongabezi also has a private family villa known as The Dog House, which has three separate decks and two small islands connected by wooden walkways.

Sampan Dining
Can you imagine a dining experience more private than having the entire Zambezi River to yourself whilst your food is paddled out to you, one course at a time?
The sampan dinner or early morning breakfast is available throughout the year, apart from during the highest river levels, which are usually from March to June.
