Safari Plains actually lies on a piece of adjacent land just outside the Mabula reserve and was previously an independent reserve known as Thandeka – however it has now been taken over and superbly upgraded by the operators of Mabula and given its own private entry gates into the Mabula reserve for most game drives (accessed via a short drive from the camp) There is however a good variety of plains game to be seen on Safari Plain’s own land, with unusual species like sable antelope being a particular attraction. With an unfenced boundary to the Timbavati, which in turn is open to the Kruger National Park, KwaMbili is home to the Big 5 and a myriad of other animals. The game drives with trained rangers and trackers in open 4×4 vehicles will introduce you to the tracks, movements, sights and sounds which give you a window into the African bush. When not on game drive guests can view wildlife from the safety and comfort of the well-positioned hide on the perimeter of the camp overlooking a small waterhole in front of the hide and the KwaMbili dam, a little further away, is also visible from the hide. The lodge swimming pool also allows for views of the surrounding bush alternatively one can just relax in an armchair or enjoy a cool drink at the bar. Accommodation at KwaMbili consists of large Meru style safari tents and one luxury chalet. The large safari tents are under a thatched roof, protecting them from falling leaves and making them cooler in summer. The roof extends over a small private patio with table and chairs. Each tent has an en-suite shower and flush toilet, electricity and air-conditioning. As the tents are on the outskirts of the camp you will have a full uninterrupted view of the bush from your patio. One of the tents is large enough to accommodate a family of 4 or 5. The chalet is close to the main buildings and features air-conditioning, an ensuite bathroom, mosquito nets over the bed and a small private patio with table and chairs. A water point is located close to the front opening and elephants regularly drink from this point or walk right past the front of The Hide. The roof which is just above ground level is reinforced and can carry the weight of any elephant that might wander across the top. The Hide is accessed from a path within the Lodge garden, or from the swimming pool, so guests can safely move along the walkway and into the tunnel without being seen by the animals and in complete safety. The front of The Hide has an expanded metal grid which is completely open and out of sight but can be quickly dropped if anyone is feeling nervous. Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge Game Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve 1/8 Location Madikwe Game Reserve, North West Province, South Africa Madikwe Game Reserve is currently the country's fourth largest game reserve and home to the Big 5 and a host of other game. DESCRIPTION: Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is situated on the Tweedepoort Ridge overlooking the plains and inselbergs of the western section of Madikwe Game Reserve. Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge is a 16-bed luxury facility designed by Nick Plewman, an acclaimed small lodge designer. The lodge is situated at a prime site in the west of the Madikwe Game Reserve, straddling the Tweedepoort Ridge with expansive views across the northern plains and Inselbergs. The central lodge sits on the slopes of a hill across a ravine, separating it from the chalets. Each of the chalets is positioned on the ridge with expansive views to the north. The main lodge is spectacularly located on two tiers of the ridge and is accessed via a wooden bridge that crosses a ravine surrounded by rock figs. Each of the living areas has its own character, mood and style providing guests with a choice of breathtaking views and tranquil spaces. The other stand-out about Buffalo Ridge is its intimacy and seclusion. With only eight suites in total, there’s a very definite feeling of exclusivity to the lodgings, and as the chalets are built on a separate tier to the main lodge you get a distinctive feeling of having your very own personal suite right in the bush. Each chalet follows this theme of making you feel like a VIP: these thatched suites each have their own private viewing deck. The rooms themselves are spacious and neat with simple and quite rustic décor touches. Thatch roofing and soft sandy tones work beautifully with the set rock inlay of the walls and the chalet’s authentic indigenous wooden counters and pillars to inspire a feeling of being a part of nature. This feeling is underscored by the design’s focus on openness and airiness: sliding doors open out fully on to a deck with seating where you can relax and admire the views; the walk-in showers also add to this feeling of spaciousness. EXCELLENT GAME VIEWING The game-viewing at Buffalo Ridge is superb, much like most safari lodges in Madikwe – but what makes Buffalo Ridge different are the rangers. Locally sourced and trained from the community, they show an obvious love for this, their home. The Big Five are all present and accounted for, as well as plains game (zebra and antelope in droves!), and none of them escape the professionalism eye and bush skill of your guides.
